Portfolio

Below is a collection of work I've created with the oldest at the bottom.

Lighting Techniques - National History Museum

A while ago CGtalk had a challenge to light a pre-made scene, the Natural History Museum.

As part of the Lighting Techniques module at university I was asked to produce four different renders from this scene; Two of them using Global Illumination and two using standard lighting. The daylight scenes use a V-Ray sun and sky system with a few IES Lights, and the night scene uses standard lights.

Camera Match 3

This video was completed for my third Match Moving module project. The brief was to match a 3D animation into a free move shot. I decided to test myself a little and used some very shaky footage. Unfortunately PFTrack had a very hard time picking up the white crosses on my arm, so a lot of manual work was required to correct the track.

Mop & Snoo - Animation and Rig Demo

Here is a quick animation showing the Mop and Snoo Rig. By producing a short animation I was able to evaluate the rig and learn how to create a better one for my next rigging project.

This video is a demonstration of the rig I have created for the rigging module at university. The model Mop and Snoo has been kindly given to me by Michael Knowland.

I'm really happy with the result and will work on producing an animation to test the rig.

The video is quite high resolution, so I'd recommend pressing full screen to view it.

Compositing Test

This video was completed in order for me to learn how to composite various elements together in a more advanced way. My main aim was to learn how to successfully use the velocity pass, which will substantially speed up render time. The fantastic plugin 'Greeble' was used to create complex geometry in the scene.

Camera Match 2

This video was completed for my second Match Moving module project. The brief was to match a 3D animation into a panning shot locked to a tripod. PFTrack was used to track the footage and 3ds Max was used to create the explosion. This module is about tracking rather than animation so I used relatively low render setting for the flame calculations.

Camera Match 1

This video was completed for my first Match Moving module project. The brief was to match a 3D animation into a still locked off shot. I added the camera movement and zoom in post using After Effects.

Alrighty Then!

This is my first stab at facial animation. I chose to use this particular clip as it has quite distinctive movement that can be broken down into keyframes to animate.

Poses - Rig Test

This is a quick animation to test out a rig I've been creating.

It has a load of facial controls to allow lots of emotion and facial expression.

Mail Baby!

This was a very quick test to lean how to create a GUI Rig.

It only had two controllers hence the simplicity of the animation, and was rigged, animated and rendered in under an hour.

Inside an Engine

I created this over a couple of days to learn how to rig piston type movement.

All objects are linked up to a cylinder that when rotated, spins everything.

Sony DSC-H10

To test my modelling skills I decided to create this camera in 3D, partly due to the wealth of available reference imagery.

It has some relatively organic flowing parts that proved quite difficult to make.

Living Room

This scene was created in order to familiarise myself with the V-Ray renderer.

There's some pretty complex lighting going on so render times were quite high in this one.

Run Cycle

After creating the walk cycle I thought I'd work on creating a run cycle.

I spent ages looking at a load of runners on youtube and dissected the movements so I could understand how to create one.

Walk Cycle

To create this walk cycle I spent ages walking and trying to understand the movements involved, and went round uni watching people walk. Until then I never noticed how different people's walks are.

Ro-V

This was animated by me for a group assignment at university.

Please note Ro-V was modelled and rigged by Ian Baird. I was responsible for animation, lighting and rendering.

RC

For an animation assignment I really wanted to create a 'pixar short' style animation. 'RC' won 3rd place for 'best animation' when I entered it into YIFTA (The Young Independent Film and Television Awards).

Sony Ericsson K800i

I use this phone every day so I decided to test my new modelling skills. The phone was created and textured within a week over the summer after completing my first year at uni.

Render times are a quick 2 minutes using Scanline Renderer with Light Tracer enabled.

4Radio

A 30 second fake advert for Channel 4's 4Radio Service.

Created in After Effects as an introduction to the 3D elements.

The 4radio logo required some scripting in order for it to scale to the beat.
